Members must ensure all dogs under their control or that have been placed in guardian homes, both adults and puppies, are properly housed, exercised , fed and watered .
All dogs must have access to clean water at all times.
All areas where dogs and puppies will be housed and whelped must be sanitary.
Food and water dishes must be cleaned regularly using a disinfectant detergent.
All Dogs and puppies must receive proper veterinary care when required.
All dogs and puppies in their control must be up to date on age appropriate vaccinations.
All dogs in members control must be kept clean and free of matted fur and have nails clipped to a length as to not promote discomfort to the dog while walking.
Members must keep the mental health of the dogs a priority by taking steps to socialize and expose them to people and if possible children.
Members must keep all dogs and puppies free from parasites (fleas/worms)
Members must follow the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare described below.
•Freedom from hunger and thirst
•Freedom from discomfort
•Freedom from pain, injury, or disease
•Freedom to express normal behaviours
•Freedom from fear and distress
Members must follow all laws or legal requirements pertaining to the care and keeping of dogs in the area in which they reside.
Should any of the members animals be surrendered to or taken from them by local authorities, they will inform the directors of the NAEB immediately.
Members must agree NOT to breed sick or injured dogs and only choose to breed dogs where they are confident in the dogs current healthy status.
Members must also:
1.Provide adequate human supervision and access to human assistance during the whelping period and following the birth of the puppies.
2.Ensure the whelping box has a floor area two and a half times the size of the dam.
3.Provide Absorbent bedding to keep the dam and puppies clean and dry.
4.Ensure excrement is removed from whelping area at least twice daily, or more often as required to ensure good health and sanitation.
5.The whelping area allows the dam to have access to food, water, and the ability to rest and eliminate away from the puppies.
6.The water bowl is situated so that a puppy cannot fall into it.
7.Ensure the whelping box prevents puppies from escaping or harming themselves.
8.Provide until puppies are able to successfully thermo regulate, a supplemental source of safe heating .
Members must keep accurate breeding records as well as health records of dams and puppies in their care.
Members must keep NAEB up to date on their contact information.
Members with a website must include a link to the NAEB home page while a current member in good standing and will remove the link if not in good standing or if suspended or awaiting suspension.
Non members or members NOT in good standing must NOT use the NAEB Logo or name the Association for advertising purposes.
Members must not mislead consumers in regards to health and parentage of puppies.
Members failing to observe any provisions of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Operation / NAEB rules may be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, removal from the NAEB register and disqualification from membership without refund of monies paid.
